Mariam Jaafar (born 8 February 1977) is a Singaporean politician from the governing People's Action Party (PAP). She has been representing the Woodlands division of Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2020.

Before entering politics, Mariam had a successful career in finance and consulting, holding numerous key positions for several companies.

Early education

Mariam was raised in a modest one-room HDB flat in Singapore. Her mother was a nurse, and her father was a Malay language teacher. She studied at Raffles Girls' School and Raffles Junior College after receiving the MENDAKI scholarship at 13.

Mariam obtained both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering by 2000 from Stanford University. She earned her Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School in 2006.

Career

She has been with the Boston Consulting Group (BCF) since 2006 and is currently Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group (Singapore). Her role enables her to pioneer initiatives to boost women's numbers, success and satisfaction at the firm across Southeast Asia nations under Women@BCG.[1]

Before entering BCG, she worked for Barclays Wealth, where she was Chief of Staff and COO for Asia, Middle East and Africa. She was also an investment manager at the venture capital company Vertex Management.

Mariam also serves on the Board of Directors of the Government Technology Agency and GovTech and Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), in addition to the Board of Governors of Raffles Girls' School (Secondary). Also, she has been engaged in several Government committees, such as the Committee for the Future Economy Main Committee, where she served Co-Chair of the Future Connectivity Subcommittee. and the Financial Institutions Practice.

Political career

Mariam began her political career in 2020 when she was introduced as a PAP candidate. She won 67.29 per cent of the votes in the 2020 general election, defeating candidates from the opposition National Solidarity Party (NSP). Since her electoral victory, she has actively contributed to several parliamentary committees and government initiatives.

Besides her roles in the parliament. Mariam is also vice-chairperson of the Sembawang Town Council and a board member of several organizations, including the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) and Sentosa Development Corporation.[2]

Advocate for Mental Health Issues

Mariam pays serious attention to mental health issues. She recounted meeting a resident who asked for help to transfer her flat's ownership to her son. It was found out that the woman lost her other son due to suicide. The resident's son suffered from a bipolar disorder.[3]

In the parliamentary meeting, Mariam stated the importance of the equal implementation of Healthier SG principles—national initiatives introduced by the Ministry of Health focusing on preventive health—to mental health issues.

Mariam is married to Heng Teck Thai.
