Political Career

Tambyah joined the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) in 2010, initially contributing to policy papers on healthcare. He made his electoral debut in the 2015 General Election as part of the SDP team for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

In the 2020 General Election, he contested the Bukit Batok SMC, achieving a significant vote share of 45.2% against the PAP's Murali Pillai. He is widely recognized for his articulate advocacy for healthcare reform, including the SDP's proposal for a single-payer universal healthcare system in Singapore.

In March 2025, the SDP announced that Tambyah would return to contest the Bukit Panjang SMC for a second time in the 2025 General Election.[1] Despite a vigorous campaign focused on local municipal issues and national healthcare costs, Tambyah was unsuccessful in his bid, garnering 38.59% of the vote against the PAP’s Liang Eng Hwa, who secured 61.41%.

In his post-election analysis, Tambyah attributed the result in Bukit Panjang to a significant disparity in campaign resources between the SDP and the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), noting the challenges faced by independent and opposition parties in maintaining a long-term ground presence against state-linked grassroots organizations.
