Controversies
Affair with fellow MP while holding post of Speaker of Parliament
- Tan Chuan-Jin resigned 17 July 2023 after Lee Hsien Loong revealed that the former, a married man and father of two, had been having an affair with fellow PAP MP Cheng Li Hui of Tampines GRC, who is single, since at least 2020
- despite being spoken to and counseled, most recently in February 2023, both he and Cheng Li Hui carried on with their "inappropriate relationship".
- both tendered their resignation on the same day
- post scandal, Tan Chuan-Jin stepped down as president of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and as an adviser to the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). He also left his roles as patron of the Centre for Fathering and chairman of the NUS Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum's advisory committee.
“Fxxking populist" comment as Speaker of Parliament
- called another Member of Parliament a “fxxking populist”, apparently made in response to a speech by Associate Professor Jamus Lim, Member of Parliament for Seng Kang GRC from the Workers’ Party.[1]
- despite "unparliamentary" behaviour, was not censured[2][3]
Old people collect cardboard as form of 'exercise'
- Jul 2015 - Youth Corp members highlighted the plight of some cardboard collectors in Singapore
- as Minister of Social and Family Development, he commented that "Some prefer to earn extra monies, treat it as a form of exercise and activity rather than being cooped up at home."[4]
- roundly criticised by public for being out-of-touch and putting a spin on the lives of the elderly aunties and uncles who pick cardboards for a living and that his remarks were insensitive and amounted to whitewashing a sad situation.
Latest Update
- May 2024 - he stirred up public scrutiny again when he was scheduled to reappear publicly at a masterclass series by the Singapore Manufacturing Federation on 10 July 2024. The three session masterclass cost S$1,000, and received ridicule from some quarters.[5]
- as of 2025, he refers to himself as " Leader", "Consultant", "Advisor", "Board Member", "Mentor", "Speaker" on his Linkedin page.
